New Laptop Post Part II

admin 0

Well, I’ll let you all know how this turns out. I’ve ran into some problems with the new Laptop and am having to return it. In doing a bit of testing, I tried to restore the factory image of Windoze 8, and lo and behold, it would not install the OS to the SSD. It insisted on installing it to the 1Tb 5400rpm hdd. This was absolutely intolerable as the whole point of the SSD is for the speed gains with the OS, and the 5400rpm drive was for file storage.

I have been told I’ll be getting a full refund, so we’ll see how things turn out. If they don’t go my way, expect a serious rant about the company I bought it from!

Anyway, at some point today I’ll UPS it back to them and wait patiently for my money to be returned so I can start the whole process of laptop shopping again.  What a pain. read more

VirtualBox improvements via VBoxManage

admin 0

Just a short post to add a couple of tips I’ve picked up over the last couple of months when running VM’s using Oracles VirtualBox software using the VBoxManage tool.

This will assume your using a Debian based Distro, though it’s quite possible it will also work for other Linux flavors.  From the terminal type the following;

VBoxManage setextradata MacOSX “CustomVideoMode1” “1920x1080x32”

This will allow you to achieve the full resolution of your 1920×1080 resolution screen, instead of being stuck with the current VirtualBox limitation of 1024×768.  Replace MacOSX with the name of your VM obviously.

To double your VRam, from the terminal type the following;

VBoxManage modifyvm MacOSX –vram 256

Again, obviously replace MacOSX with the name of your VM!

Enjoy the added performance! read more
